For christmas, I made myself a cookie plate using a meme of a t-rex trying to put a star on top of a christmas tree, but can’t reach because of his tiny arms. The glaze came out mostly great (a few mistakes) but the plate stress cracked in the Kiln. I meant to try again sometime.
The studio had a fall fundraiser coming up, and was asking members to donate mugs. I had just made an elephant mug, and thought a dinosaur mug would be fun with it’s tail being the handle. This turned into two sketches, a bronto and a stegasaurus. I couldn’t decide which I liked better, so I decided to do both. The studio manager thought they were adorable and suggested adding themed plates and we could make it a set for the auction portion of the event.
The christmas plates came to mind, and I decided to make two t-rex plates to go with the mugs, and I’d make the mugs christmas themed as well. I even had a glaze that looks a bit snowy.
I didn’t want to make the plates if they were for sale as the meme was my original idea, but for a charity auction for a non-profit, where I didn’t make any profit, I was ok with that. What followed was epic amount of work in a short time. Because it was for an auction I fussed and perfected much much more than I usually do. The fun idea became a lot of work.
I don’t have any photos of the finished set, but it did raise a lot of money for the studio. I didn’t even get to see the auction because I couldn’t be at the event. I was told my piece was the talk of the evening and a lot of bidding took place. I also heard the winner was overjoyed and loved the set very much.
I may attempt some dino mugs in the future with a different design.
